Shafer Baillie Mansion Bed & Breakfast

This beautiful house is named for two early owners, Alexander Baillie, a wealthy Northwest resident of Scottish descent who helped introduce golf to Seattle, and Julius Shafer, of the Shafer Brothers Land company.  The Shafers entertained lavishly, and at that time the third floor held a ballroom and pipe organ.  Recent research has shown that the house was actually built for Samuel Loeb, president of the Independent Brewing Company (makers of Old German Beer), who sold it to Mr. Baillie in 1918 as Prohibition was looming, and moved to San Francisco.  In 1952, Burell and Emma Johnson purchased the mansion and used it as a rooming house.  In 1979, the house was opened to the public as a bed and breakfast.  Mark Mayhle and Ana Lena Melka, owners since 2004, have completed an extensive top-to-bottom restoration of the property and brought it back to its original elegance, but completely updated with 21st century infrastructure.

All of our rooms and suites feature telephone with voicemail and free local calls, 32" LCD HDTV with digital cable, remote, and DVD player (50" HDTV in the Master Suite), and Ethernet port with free high-speed Internet access.  WiFi Internet access is also available upon request.  All guests are welcome in the common living areas including the second-floor landing/sitting area and the first-floor day rooms.  A computer with Internet access and printer is available in the library for guest use.

Ideally situated for both business and vacation travelers.  Families are welcome.  Destinations including downtown Seattle, the Washington Convention Center, University of Washington, most major Seattle hospitals, Pike Place Market, Seattle Center, Seattle waterfront including restaurants, ferries, and cruise departures, are all minutes away.

The mansion has also been host to many weddings, parties, meetings and events.  Extensive original quarter-sawn oak and rich mahogany woodwork, eclectic antique and reproduction furnishings, Oriental rugs, and many original and period-style fixtures add to the ambience.

Our expanded continental breakfast includes items such as pastry or muffins, bagels or croissants, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, yogurt, cheeses, hot and cold cereal, milk, juice, tea, and coffee.  Tea and coffee are available throughout the day.
