Whidbey Island Marathon
Whidbey Island is the perfect weekend getaway where you can leave the city behind. If you are a runner, visit the island on April 23 for the Whidbey Island Marathon. This run includes a 26.2, 13.1, 5k, 10k and a 1k kids run.
On Saturday, head to the Event - Expo at Oak Harbor High School. Here they will accomodate late registration and you can pick up your packets. There will also be an expo open to the public. The Event and Expo are open noon till 7:00pm on Friday.
The full marathon starts at 7:00am on Sunday at Pass Lake. The 5k, 10k as well as the Half Marathon and Kids run start at Bayshore Drive Waterfront between 8:30am and 10:00am. Check their website for exact starting times for each event. Finish line celebration is at the Bayshore Drive Waterfront at 10:00am.
There is no parking at Pass Lake, so Marathon runners should use the free shuttle buses. If you are staying at one of several hotels in Oak Harbor, the shuttle will pick you up there and take you to the start of the Marathon and will return you to your hotel afterward. (see their website for specific hotels included). Others can park close to the Bayshore Drive Waterfront finish point. The shuttles will take runners to the start point at Pass Lake.
The marathon course along Whidbey Island winds through beautiful farmland and along the water. Be aware, this is NOT a closed course. It will be flagged and marked, but there will be traffic.
This race is a Boston Qualifier, USATF-Certified Courses.
Whidbey Island is a short 2 hour drive or fun ferry ride from Seattle. From Seattle travel north on I-5 to Burlington and take WA-State Route 20 west toward Anacortes. Then follow WA-State Route 20 to Oak Harbor.
While on Whidbey Island, take in the sights. This is a great weekend destination. Hike Deception Pass, visit Coupeville and Langley, both charming small towns with lots of history...and place to shop and dine.
